What is Aeration?
Hollow tine aeration is the mechanical process of removing soil cores from a lawn. These cores (pictured opposite) should be between 1 and 2 inches deep and half an inch in diameter. Core aeration requires specialist equipment. The main purpose of aeration is to reduce soil compaction.
Soil Compaction...What's that?
Over time, the particles of soil underneath your lawn become crushed or 'compacted' together. Grass can not grow properly in compacted soils. This is because important nutrients can not penetrate down to the 'root layer'. Soil compaction can also lead to problems with drainage and infestations of weed and moss.
Do I need my lawn aerated?
Only if your lawn is presenting the symptoms of soil compaction:
- Pale or patchy turf
- Flooded or water logged areas
- Weed and moss
- Your fertilisers don't appear to work
- Grass dies off quickly during warmer periods
