LawnAid. Ltd - Scarification

What is scarification?

Scarification is the mechanical process of removing moss and thatch from a lawn. LawnAid ltd. only use purpose built scarifiers to completely remove both moss and thatch. This should not be confused with the use of DIY scarifiers and electric lawn rakes.

What is thatch?

Thatch is a layer of dead organic matter that builds up on and under lawns. Every lawn needs a certain level of thatch but an excess can cause severe damage to the health and appearance of your lawn. Thick thatch can block nutrients from reaching the grass roots, starving your lawn of air, water and even certain fertilisers. It also encourages weed growth.

Does my garden require scarification?

Every lawn needs scarification - at some time. Because thatch is naturally occurring, it can not be stopped, only maintained at an appropriate level. The following symptoms suggest a scarification programme is required:

  • Yellow patches immune to fertiliser
  • Areas of warer logged turf
  • Weed and moss growth
  • Excess thatch may give your lawn a springy feel

Scarification is not a quick fix! The process will remove the majority of surface grass from your lawn. It is important this grass grows back before weeds and moss have a chance to take hold. For this reason our clients usually agree to a follow up fertiliser programme administered by our NPTC certified sprayers.
